Description: In addition to being one of our greatest American singer-songwriters and film composers, Randy Newman long ago established himself among our sharpest and most caustic wits. His enduring work has established Newman as a songwriter's songwriter -- one of the most musically and lyrically ambitious singer-songwriters ever to be at play in the fields of popular music.
With 1977's Top Ten album, Little Criminals, Newman experienced a huge left-field smash in the unlikely form of "Short People?" - a rare, strange and at times uncomfortable brush with full-blown pop stardom for Newman.
In 1981, Newman released his exquisite score for Milos Forman's adaptation of E.L. Doctrow's Ragtime -- earning him his first two of sixteen Oscar nominations for Best Score and Best Song.
His 1983 album Trouble in Paradise included the hit single "I Love L.A.", a song that has been interpreted as both praising and critiquing its subject.
In the Nineties, Newman began enjoying massive success with his film work, including his outstanding music for films like Toy Story, James and the Giant Peach, Babe: Pig in the City and the Grammy winners A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Monsters, Inc.
In 2002, Newman won his first Oscar for "If I Didn't Have You?" from Monsters Inc. and in 2004 came an Emmy award for the main title music for the cable series "Monk," and in 2006 Newman scored the music for the Pixar film "Cars," which yielded a Grammy Award and as Platinum album.
Newman will be writing the music to an upcoming Walt Disney movie called The Princess and the Frog, which is scheduled for release in 2009.
Randy Newman is more than a mere master of understatement -- he is one of the real masters of modern American music.

"Harps and Angels," Randy's latest collection of songs, will be released by Nonesuch in August 2008!
